Partiamo da lontano, dai mondiali di calcio del 2014. Italia contro Costarica, a sorpresa 0-1. Al di là delle ovvie polemiche calcistiche si sviluppo un vivace dibattito lessicale sui nostri avversari. Costarica o Costa Rica? “Il” Costarica o “la” Costarica? Superfluo evidenziare come una buona parte dei nostri connazionali scoprì in quell’occasione l’esistenza di questo paese del Centroamerica. Il paese da cui provengono gli Höwler, con ‘No More Circus!’ al loro terzo album – il primo però a godere di una diffusione internazionale grazie alla loro label, la tedesca Ragnarök. Ed è un signor disco, che infatti sta facendo parlare di sè da un paio di mesi nei circoli underground più illuminati. E a ragione, perché il thrash metal degli Höwler è curato e personale, senza mai rinunciare alla giusta dosa di energia. Saldamente ancorato negli anni Ottanta, non disdegna qualche richiamo al metal classico – vedi le chitarre maideniane della opener ‘Empire Of The Clowns’. ‘No More Circus!’ richiama in modo evidente il classico thrash della Bay Area, citando di passaggio Metallica, Megadeth ed Exodus, forte di un ottimo guitarwork e di una fantasia compositiva davvero degna di nota. Un thrash metal ragionato dunque, tecnico senza essere astruso, che non disdegna passaggi melodici a volte oscuri – la cupa ‘Behind The Green Mask’, con i suoi richiami ai Metal Church. La sostanza è che ‘No More Circus!’ è un disco davvero valido e, per tornare alle domande iniziali, possiamo chiamare il loro paese come vogliamo, ma gli Höwler ci hanno dato un motivo per aggiungerlo al nostro personale mappamondo metallico.
